Must see in Edinburgh

One of the most beautiful cities in Scotland is Edinburgh. Besides the beautiful city and the amazing shopping possibilities, there are several other things that can make a day in Edinburgh unforgettable. Here you can find an online city tour through Edinburgh including
1) Detailed descriptions of sights
2) A map of the best route
3) Pictures of the beautiful sunset

If you want you can make a one day trip to Edinburgh seeing the most interesting highlights of the city and without missing anything or being in a hurry. However you will need the whole day if you want to see everything. I prefer to go on foot so I designed a route which starts at Edinburgh Bus station. If you want to start at the train station it is perfectly alright since it is even closer to the first stop. You can find the train station on the map as well.

By the way, the best way to get to Edinburgh is to go by bus. I can recommend MegaBus since it is cheap, comfortable and very quick. During the week you pay 2-3 pounds, during the weekend 4-6 pounds there and back! MegaBus leaves at Glasgow Buchanan Bus Station and takes approximately 1:15 hours to go there.

Must see in Edinburgh:
  • Greyfriars Kirkyard-graveyard (J. K. Rowling drew her inspiration from the graveyard to name the characters of her book series Harry Potter. There you can find the gravestone of Thomas Riddell who is called Thomas Ridle in the book and is famous for being Lord Voldemord)
  • Greyfriars Bobby-statue (The statue of a dog that became famous in the 19th century because of its faithfulness to its master. After his death in 1858 the dog stayed in front of the grave for the rest of its life, 14 years in total. At the age of 16 the dog died and was secretly buried next to its former owner on the graveyard)
  • Parliament (modern parliament which does not really fit into the rustic city. However, expecially if you are politically interested it is worth it to have a look on the inside since the big meeting room is very impressive)
  • "Oink" restaurant (which is famous for the best Pulled Pork in Scotland)
  • Calton Hill (There you can find the National and Burns Monument - Scotts Monument. Furthermore, you have a beautiful view on the city which you can enjoy if you do not want to climb Arthur's Seat)
  • "The Fudge House" (offers unique and delicious fudge)
  • Einburgh Castle (impressive sight but very expensive and it takes a very long time to visit it)
  • Arthur's Seat (the highest mountain in Edinburgh where you can have a look around the whole city and the coast. This is the best place to watch the sunset if you are lucky enough to have good weather)
